Livestock, done better

A sober protein guide has to examine livestock too: feed, methane, land, local ecology and the products people value.

Improving existing animal production fairly

Livestock systems differ widely. Species, feed, land quality, management and region all affect their impacts. A single number for “meat” can hide more than it reveals.

Ruminants produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Grazing animals can use land that is difficult to crop, but that does not mean all grazing is beneficial or that every hectare has no alternative use. The counterfactual matters.

Improvement can include animal health, feed efficiency, manure management and lower-emissions practices. It should be assessed against clear boundaries and outcomes, not treated as a reason to ignore the land and climate costs that remain.

Livestock and alternative proteins are not always direct substitutes. Food choices, co-products, livelihoods and land management belong in the discussion alongside emissions.
